J. Cole developed a passion for music early on, starting with a gift for rapping at age 12. He started producing his own beats when he was 15, and by the time he was in high school, he was already gaining attention for his skills. While attending university he started making a name for himself in the underground rap scene, putting out mixtapes and collaborating with other artists.
